Orange Essence League of Legends Guide

Orange Essence crystal with farming and spending paths in League of Legends guide hero image

Got a bunch of Orange Essence sitting in your loot tab? Or maybe you’re staring at that legendary skin shard, just 1520 OE short of making it permanent? Yeah, been there. Orange Essence is weird because you can’t just buy it like RP, and most players have no clue how to get more efficiently.

After Riot changed the loot system, getting Orange Essence became way more confusing. Free skins are still possible though. You just need to know the right methods and avoid wasting OE on garbage.

What is Orange Essence?

Orange Essence (OE) is that orange crafting currency in your loot tab. You need it to transform skin shards into permanent skins you can actually use. Same goes for ward skins, emotes, and other cosmetic stuff.

Big difference from Blue Essence here. BE unlocks champions and gameplay stuff. OE is only for making yourself look cool. And unlike RP, there’s no store button to buy Orange Essence. Riot doesn’t sell it directly, which makes every bit of OE pretty valuable.

The only ways to get it? Disenchanting cosmetic shards or getting lucky with chest drops. Some events drop OE too, but that’s basically it. No magic tricks or secret farming spots.

How to Get Orange Essence

Four main ways to get Orange Essence in League of Legends shown as hextech holograms

There are four main ways to farm OE right now. Some work better than others, but you’ll probably use all of them eventually.

Disenchanting Skin Shards

Most of your Orange Essence will come from disenchanting skin shards you don’t want. Maybe it’s for a champion you hate, or the skin just looks terrible. Whatever the reason, turning unwanted shards into OE is the main farming method.

The amount you get varies wildly based on the skin tier:

Skin TierRP ValueDisenchant ValueUpgrade Cost
Standard520 RP104 OE220 OE
Budget750 RP150 OE450 OE
Classic975 RP195 OE675 OE
Epic1350 RP270 OE1050 OE
Legendary1820 RP364 OE1520 OE
Ultimate3250 RP650 OE2950 OE

Pro tip: Those cheap 520 RP skins give terrible OE value. Better to reroll three of them for a random permanent skin.

Opening Hextech Chests

Every Hextech Chest has an 11.5% chance to contain 150 bonus Orange Essence directly. Not amazing odds, but free OE is free OE. Plus, most chests drop skin shards anyway, giving you more disenchant fodder.

Quick note about bad luck protection – if you open two Hextech Chests without getting any skin shards, your third chest is guaranteed to contain one. Riot added this to prevent those soul-crushing streaks of champion shards and emotes.

Oh, and if you’re wondering about Masterwork Chests – they’re gone. Riot removed them completely, so regular Hextech Chests are your only option now.

Getting chests regularly helps a lot. If you want to maximize chest farming, having a lol smurf account lets you earn chests on different champions since each champ can only earn one chest per season.

Event Rewards

Events drop tons of Orange Essence if you know where to look. Most event passes include OE in their free rewards track. We’re talking 250-500 OE just for completing basic missions. Even without buying the pass, free event missions sometimes give OE directly.

The Hall of Legends battle pass is especially good for Orange Essence farming. The free track alone gives 3,000 OE spread across different milestone rewards. That’s enough to upgrade almost any skin shard you want. Just remember to actually play during the event to hit those milestones.

Event orbs and capsules also pack better loot than regular Hextech Chests. During big events like Lunar Revel or Worlds, grinding out all the free rewards can net you 1000+ OE easily.

Other Sources

Some smaller OE sources that add up over time:

  • Ward skin shards give around 150 OE when disenchanted
  • Emote permanents can be disenchanted for 60 OE
  • Eternal shards give small amounts too
  • Honor capsules sometimes contain OE or skin shards
  • Prime Gaming capsules (if you have Amazon Prime)

Smart Ways to Use Orange Essence

Balance scale showing smart versus wasteful ways to spend Orange Essence in League of Legends

Now for the important part. Getting OE is one thing, but wasting it hurts way more than you think.

The Upgrade vs Disenchant Decision

Only upgrade skins you genuinely want to use. Sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how many players waste OE on mediocre skins just because they have the shard. Before upgrading anything, check out the lol skins database to see how skins actually look in-game.

Math example: Epic skins (1350 RP) need 1050 OE to upgrade but only give 270 OE when disenchanted. You literally need to sacrifice four epic shards to upgrade one. Make it count.

The Reroll Strategy

Three trash skin shards equals one permanent random skin through rerolling. This works great for those worthless 520-750 RP shards that barely give any OE. Sure, you might get another cheap skin back, but at least it’s permanent and didn’t cost any Orange Essence.

Priority List for F2P Players

  1. Save OE for skins you’ll actually use regularly
  2. Legendary skins are worth the investment if you get the shard
  3. Reroll cheap shards instead of disenchanting for pennies
  4. Ward skins are OE traps unless you really love them
  5. Keep 1500+ OE saved for when that perfect skin shard drops

Orange Essence vs Blue Essence

Side-by-side comparison of Orange Essence and Blue Essence crystals in League of Legends

People mix these up constantly, so here’s the deal:

Orange Essence unlocks cosmetics. Skins, wards, emotes, nothing else. Blue Essence unlocks actual game content like champions and name changes. They’re completely separate currencies with different sources. You can farm BE just by playing games. OE requires sacrificing cosmetic shards or getting chest drops.

Can’t convert between them either. Your 50,000 Blue Essence won’t help you get that skin you want.

Orange Essence FAQ

Find quick answers about farming and spending OE right here.

Can you buy Orange Essence with RP?

No direct purchase option exists. You can buy chests that might contain OE or skin shards, but that’s just gambling with extra steps.

How much Orange Essence do you get from legendary skin shards?

Legendary skin shards (1820 RP skins) give 364 OE when disenchanted.

Is it worth upgrading 520 RP skin shards?

Almost never. They cost 220 OE to upgrade but only give 104 OE when disenchanted. Reroll them instead.

What’s the fastest way to farm Orange Essence?

Hit every event for free rewards and maintain Honor level 2+ for honor capsules. Also claim Prime Gaming loot if available.

Can you get Orange Essence without opening chests?

Yes, through event rewards, honor capsules, and Prime Gaming rewards.

Should I save Orange Essence for events?

No special reason to. OE doesn’t expire and upgrade costs don’t change during events.

How much Orange Essence do ward skins give?

Ward skin shards typically disenchant for 150-200 OE.

What happened to Masterwork Chests?

Riot removed Masterwork Chests from the game entirely. They used to have better drop rates for skin shards, but now we only have regular Hextech Chests.

Are Mythic Essence and Orange Essence the same thing?

o, they’re completely different. Mythic Essence is the purple currency for exclusive mythic skins in the Mythic Shop. Orange Essence is for regular skin shards. You can’t convert between them.

Can you gift Orange Essence to friends?

Nope, locked to your account permanently.

Final Thoughts

Orange Essence basically comes down to patience and smart choices. Disenchant the junk, upgrade the gems. Don’t sit on 10,000 OE waiting for the “perfect” skin, but don’t blow it all on mediocre stuff either.

The current system rewards players who grind events and make calculated decisions about their shards. Every skin shard represents a choice between immediate OE or a potential permanent skin. Choose based on what you actually want, not what seems valuable.
