Been tracking patches since Season 4. Back then? Random drops. Monday patch during promos? GG. Lost Diamond to a Yasuo bug giving 100% crit level 1. Still mad about it.
Now it’s 2026. Bi-weekly schedule. Mostly Wednesdays. Five Thursday exceptions this year. Predictable enough.
Quick Facts
After tracking 200+ patches, here’s what actually matters.
All 24 patches for 2026. Currently on Patch 26.05 (released March 4). Season split into three themed blocks of eight patches each.
Naming stays the same as late 2025. Year dot patch number. 26.05 means fifth patch of 2026. Simple.
Wednesday. 3 AM PT. Every two weeks.
Five patches in 2026 land on Thursday instead (26.01, 26.02, 26.04, 26.11, 26.18). But Wednesday is still the default.
Regional timing
Never play ranked during patch drop. Ever. Lost 200 LP on patch 14.5 when they gutted my main. Didn’t read notes. Pain.
Extended cycles Two 3-week gaps in 2026. Between 26.13 and 26.14 (July 4th break) and between 26.23 and 26.24 (winter scheduling). Same pattern as previous years.
Patch notes drop Tuesday around 11 AM PT. One day before the patch goes live. Read them or lose LP.
Three themed seasons in 2026. Same structure as 2025 but with new themes, new events, and two separate Battle Passes per season (one per act).
Season 1 “For Demacia” (Jan 8 to Apr 15)
Demacia-themed everything. Summoner’s Rift got a full map skin with petricite architecture and gold-blue accents. “Salvation” cinematic launched alongside Season 1. Interactive “Demacia Rising” PvE event runs throughout with settlement building and story chapters. Act 1 brought Petricite Cho’Gath and Nautilus skins plus Prestige Veiled Lady Morgana. Act 2 started with Patch 26.05 and added Corrupted Petricite Maokai and Xerath plus Prestige Requiem Sona.
Season 2 (Apr 29 to Aug 12)
Theme not officially revealed yet. Riot confirmed it will connect to the Demacia storyline from Season 1. For reference, 2025’s second season was Spirit Blossom/Ionia.
Season 3 (Aug 26 to Dec)
Also unannounced. Riot said it will have no connection to Seasons 1 and 2. 2025’s third season was the Classic/Darkin theme.
One new champion for the entire year. The fewest ever. Down from two in 2025 and three in 2024. Riot is putting resources into “League Next” instead, their major game modernization project covering engine, visuals, client and core systems.
Shyvana is the big one. Full VGU dropping March 18 in Patch 26.06. She was runner-up to Skarner in the 2021 VGU poll and got delayed from 2025 because of Arcane Season 2 priorities. New kit keeps the AD bruiser identity but overhauls everything. Her ult now fears enemies along the flight path. Dragon Form physically grows her larger with each ult rank. All existing skins updated. AP artillery build still technically works but it’s suboptimal by design now.
Mel Medarda got a significant mid-scope rework in Patch 26.03. The old W damage immunity was removed and replaced with a shield plus projectile-destroying AoE. She had an insane ban rate despite balanced win rates. Way less frustrating to play against now.
The upcoming new champion is widely leaked as Locke, a Demacian AP assassin/bruiser who fights with “Soul Nails” made of petricite. First appeared on the cover of the “For the Fallen” motion comic in Patch 26.3. Riot hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet. Expected to release during Season 2, around Patch 26.09 or later.
Patch 26.01 was massive. Biggest system overhaul in years. No traditional preseason, everything went live January 8.
Role Quests give every position unique progression. Complete quests in your assigned lane and you get meaningful rewards. Top laners earn bonus XP and enhanced Teleport. Mid laners get free Tier 3 boots and empowered Recall. ADCs receive a lump gold sum, increased gold gen, and a seventh item slot for boots. Junglers get faster quest completion, more camp rewards, and movement speed in jungle and river. Supports gain a separate Control Ward slot, discounted wards at 40g, and nearly doubled passive gold gen.
Map and objective changes hit hard too. Atakhan, Bloody Roses, and Feats of Strength from 2025 are all gone. Turret plating no longer disappears at 14 minutes. Tier 1 plates are permanent now, and Tier 2/3 turrets also have 3 plates each. Nexus turrets respawn at 40% health for better base defense. Minions and camps spawn 35 seconds earlier.
11 new or returning items including Hextech Gunblade (AD/AP hybrid with spell vamp, yes it’s back), Stormrazor, Bastionbreaker (lethality true damage item), and Bandlepipes (2000g tank/support item that became meta-defining instantly). Base crit damage returned to 200%.
ARAM Mayhem has been extended indefinitely with no planned end date. Brawl mode is back March 4 through April 28. WASD movement controls available in all modes except ranked.
T1 completed the three-peat. First team ever to win three consecutive World Championships. They beat KT Rolster 3-2 in the Grand Final on November 9, 2025 in Chengdu. That’s six World titles total for T1 (2013, 2015, 2016, 2023, 2024, 2025).
Finals MVP went to Gumayusi, the first ADC to receive the honor since Ruler in 2017. The award was presented by 2025 Hall of Legends inductee Uzi.
The tournament ran October 14 to November 9 across three Chinese cities.
17 teams, $5 million prize pool, 6.7 million peak concurrent viewers. First Worlds to use Fearless Draft. T1 started from Play-In Stage, only the second team to win Worlds that way after DRX in 2022.
Worlds 2026 is heading to the United States. Texas for most of the tournament, New York City for the Grand Final.
Provisional dates are October 16 to November 14, 2026. Field expands to 18 teams (up from 17). Three spots each for LCK, LPL, LEC, LCS, and LCP, one for CBLOL, plus two extra spots earned through MSI performance.
Fearless Draft confirmed for all international events again. Plus the new First Selection draft rule. The team with priority now picks either map side OR draft order, not both. Blue side no longer automatically gets first pick. Huge change for competitive balance.
This will be the U.S.’s fifth time hosting Worlds and the third NYC final after 2016 and 2022. At least the time zones will be friendlier for NA this year.
Three international tournaments this year instead of the usual two.
First Stand 2026 March 16-22, São Paulo, Brazil. Eight teams (expanded from 5 in 2025). All matches best-of-five with Fearless Draft. Played on Patch 26.05. The winning region earns a Play-In bye at MSI.
MSI 2026 June 26 to July 12, Daejeon, South Korea. 11 teams (up from 10).
Worlds 2026 October 16 to November 14, Allen TX and New York City. 18 teams.
The competitive landscape also shifted significantly. LTA (League of Legends Championship of The Americas) got dissolved after just one season. LCS and CBLOL returned as independent leagues for 2026 with the new Americas Cup bridging them. LCS now has 8 teams with LYON integrated from the former LLA.
Biggest change? The gameplay overhaul. 2025 was about thematic seasons. 2026 is about fundamentally changing how every role plays. Role Quests alone make this the most mechanically different season in years.
Stay ahead. Watch these.
Patch notes drop Tuesday around 11 AM PT. One day before the patch. Read them before you queue up.
PBE gets changes two weeks ahead. Tuesday updates. Wild balance. Don’t trust the numbers until live.
Patches hit different at different ranks.
First 3 days Chaos. Skip ranked if you value LP.
Days 4-10 You read the notes. They didn’t. Free LP.
Days 11-14 Meta settled. Normal grind.
2026 ranked improvements are actually solid. New climb indicator on loading screen shows when your MMR is above your visible rank. The Aegis of Valor system rewards autofilled players with double LP on wins or loss mitigation. Duoing is back in Apex tier.
Split schedule
Two weeks before split end is tryhard mode. Real games, not coinflips.
Check client for the exact timer. Generally every second Wednesday at 3 AM PT. Five patches in 2026 land on Thursday instead.
Worlds 2026 starts October 16. The tournament patch will likely be around Patch 26.20 or 26.21. Official confirmation TBA.
Every 2 weeks. 24 patches per year. Two 3-week gaps for summer break and winter scheduling.
Each of the five positions gets unique progression rewards. ADCs get a 7th item slot, supports get a separate ward slot, top laners get enhanced TP. Biggest gameplay change this season.
Tuesday around 11 AM PT. One day before the patch goes live.
United States. Play-Ins through Semifinals in Allen, Texas. Grand Final in New York City. October 16 to November 14.
T1 beat KT Rolster 3-2 in Chengdu, China. T1’s third consecutive World Championship and sixth overall.
Just one. The fewest ever in a single year. Riot is redirecting champion team resources to the League Next modernization project.
