Totemic Maokai was sitting in my collection for months after getting it from a chest, and I finally gave it a proper shot after around 40 games this split. Honestly wasn't expecting much from a 520 RP skin but it's become my go to over Meowkai which I bought with actual money.
The Q saplings feel way more responsive than base skin, probably because the totem animations are cleaner when they spawn. Your W root has this tribal mask effect that makes it super obvious when you've locked someone down, which helped me secure kills in messy teamfights where I'd normally lose track. But the biggest difference is the ult. That wall of totems is so much easier to track compared to the green roots on base skin. Had a dragon fight yesterday where my team actually followed up perfectly because they could see exactly where my ult was traveling through the river bushes. We ended up stealing drake and getting a triple kill off that engage.
Compared to other Maokai skins like Worldbreaker, Totemic feels less clunky overall. The animations flow better between abilities and I swear the E tosses feel faster even though they're probably the same frame data. It's definitely not pay to win but the visual clarity gives you a slight edge in chaotic fights. My teammates actually comment on how clear the abilities look which never happened with my other skins.
Is Totemic Maokai worth it? For 520 RP it's insane value if you play him regularly. The skin aged really well considering how old it is, and you're getting better visual feedback than skins that cost twice as much. Would recommend grabbing it next time it shows up in your shop.
